Aging prostates need a little TLC to protect against cancer, prostatitis, enlargement, and other problems that can cause misery and throw a wrench in your sex life.

Here are some common prostate conditions, how they affect your sex life, and what you can do to keep your prostate healthy as you get older…

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Man at the Doctor's Office

Most men develop an enlarged prostate as they age since this walnut-shaped gland doesn't stop growing. This condition, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, won't directly cause sexual side effects, but some men with an enlarged prostate develop erectile dysfunction or problems with ejaculation as a result of treatment.

Harvard Medical School reports that 3.7 percent of men who took finasteride for BPH developed erectile dysfunction, and 3.3 percent experienced a reduced sex drive. Minimally invasive procedures like stents or laser treatments can cause erectile dysfunction or retrograde ejaculation, a harmless condition marked by ejaculating backward into the bladder. Surgery, too, can cause this condition.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland that causes symptoms like pain during urination, more frequent need to urinate, fever, and discharge from the penis. Prostatitis can make ejaculation painful, and it may lead to erectile dysfunction. Acute prostatitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection, while chronic prostatitis is typically not. Antibiotics can treat the problem, but it can take several weeks before erections return to normal.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting one out of every seven males in the United States. Prostate cancer can have a profound effect on your sex drive due to the anxiety and stress associated with having this disease. Treatments for prostate cancer have a range of sexual side effects too, including trouble getting erections and having orgasms.

How to Protect Your Prostate

How acutely a prostate problem will affect your sex life depends on several factors, including the condition, its severity, your age, your general physical and mental health, and your unique genetic makeup. You can do a few things to improve your prostate health and ensure that prostate problems won't interfere with your sex life. Here are a few of them.

Exercise daily

Regular exercise reduces your risk of prostate cancer, and it can relieve symptoms of BPH.

Eat a healthy diet

The food you put into your body can make or break your prostate--and overall--health. Strive for a mostly plant-based, unprocessed diet made up of mostly whole foods.

Cut down on alcohol

Heavy alcohol use can contribute to prostate problems, among other health issues. Aim for no more than two drinks per day.
