Aging does a number on your body, and while your mind may still be up for an occasional--or frequent--romp in the sack, your body may be lagging behind a bit. Improving your overall health through healthy lifestyle changes can make a big difference in your performance, but there are a number of supplements that have also been shown to help.
Nitric oxide--not to be confused with nitrous oxide, or laughing gas--is one such supplement. While nitric oxide supplements don't actually contain nitric oxide itself, they contain the essential substances that your body uses to produce its own nitric oxide. Here are four ways nitric oxide supplements can improve your performance in and out of bed.
Nitric oxide supplements contain L-citrulline, an amino acid that increases the production of nitric oxide, which is central to an optimal erection. Nitric oxide helps the muscles in the penis relax, allowing chambers inside to fill with blood. A study published in the journal Urology found that supplementation with L-citrulline improved erection hardness in men with mild erectile dysfunction.
Muscle soreness due to exercise--or lack of it--can limit your range of motion, inhibiting your activities in the bedroom. Citrulline malate, a form of L-citrulline, also increases nitric oxide production as well as decreases muscle soreness. A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research divided 41 people into two random groups and gave one group citrulline malate and the other a placebo. The citrulline malate group experienced 40 percent less muscle soreness between 24 and 48 hours after performing numerous reps on the barbell bench.
An impairment of the body's ability to use nitric oxide is an important risk factor for high blood pressure, which can reduce your libido, dampen your interest in sex, and cause erectile dysfunction. A number of studies have shown that nitric oxide causes blood vessels to relax and dilate, thus lowering blood pressure. One analysis, published in the Journal of Nutrition, found that six out of 13 studies revealed significant blood pressure reduction with nitric oxide supplementation.
Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, which means it widens the blood vessels. This helps to increase the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the body during exercise--or during a wild romp. The most effective ingredients to increase nitric oxide levels are L-arginine and L-citrulline. In terms of physical activity and performance, L-arginine is metabolized before it reaches the bloodstream, making it less effective for performance than L-citrulline, which reaches the bloodstream intact.
